About +1ndia

Transforming India
1 person… 1 family… 1 village at a time.

Their NEED

“Sanitation is more important than independence.”
— Mahatma Gandhi, 1925

“Sanitation is India’s biggest problem.”
— Bindeswar Pathak, Dec 2003

Lack of sanitation leads to more illness and disease in India than any other cause. 700 million people have no toilets in their homes. 700,000 children die there every year due to diarrhea and dehydration caused by poor hygiene awareness. Of the 355 million menstruating women in India, 81% of rural women use sub-standard alternatives like cloth, sand, plant husks and even ash, which severely impact their health and reproductive ability.

The mission of +1ndia is to bring hygiene education and sanitary facilities to as many as we can of these rural villages that are so drastically affected. This is done through interventions for health and hygiene education, as well as helping to fund and build toilet facilities as needed.

“Water and Sanitation is one of the primary drivers of public health. I often refer to it as “Health 101,” which means that once we can secure access to clean water and to adequate sanitation facilities for all people, irrespective of the difference in their living conditions, a huge battle against all kinds of diseases will be won.”

—Dr LEE Jong-wook (1945–2006), former Director-General, World Health Organization
